Calamity Jane
Description
Deadwood, Dakota Territory, is largely the abode of men, where Indian scout Calamity Jane is as hard-riding, boastful, and handy with a gun as any; quite an overpowering personality. But the army lieutenant she favors doesn't really appreciate her finer qualities. One of Jane's boasts brings her to Chicago to recruit an actress for the Golden Garter stage.

The tunes are gold, and as Jane approaches a local creek, resplendent in her gorgeous yellow gown, we get one of the most famous visual gags in the history of the musical.April 10, 2016
Boisterous fun, with Day's performance - as the song goes - as busy as a fizzy sarsaparilla.April 08, 2016
Even if the screenwriters were obviously inspired by the mega-success of Annie Get Your Gun, that doesn't make this funny, rambunctious entertainment a mere rip-off.

As a pistol-packin' cowgirl in fringed leather trousers, Day is terrific, an object of athletic awe and irrepressible good cheer.March 26, 2009
Doris Day works very, very hard at being Calamity and is hardly realistic at all.February 28, 2007
Neither great, nor perhaps even very good, the film remains a charming artifact.April 08, 2016
The opening sequence of this wonderful musical is pure pleasure, as Doris Day rides the Deadwood stage across the screen and into our hearts.

A shrill and preposterous musical Western.April 08, 2016
A must for Doris Day fans -- she gives a rousing, no-holds barred performance that is unquestionably the making of the film.
