Despite Ricky Gervais' unique comic talents, this David Brent rock star adventure soon becomes too repetitive.

It's missing, entirely, the humanizing elements of the 'Office; series - presumably because Gervias, the sole writer/director/star (and sole performer to cross over from that series) has vastly overestimated the character's appeal.

A squeamishly funny, deeply heartfelt success.

Life on the Road was a poignant look into a character I never dreamed could be this interesting.

Maudlin and unrealistic, it's also a lot less funny than what came before.

Gervais' focus rests squarely on David's emotional implosion which, while acted and laid out quite well, is so punishing that one wonders whether it was worth checking back in on the poor guy at all.

If nothing else, this is a reminder of what a beautifully realised and horribly relatable a character David Brent is. We all know someone a bit like this man.

Gervais still wears Brent like a tailored suit, but 15 years of age has taken a lot of the bite out of both the performer and the character.

There's not as much ingenuity, originality and spark as there was in a single thirty-minute episode of The Office.
