Uncle Drew

Description
Dax has a recurring nightmare of his childhood when he lived in an orphanage and was never adopted, but he took an interest in basketball and was really good at it until Mookie blocked his shot and cost him a game, losing everyone's respect. Dax now lives with his girlfriend Jess (Tiffany Haddish) in her apartment and is basically mooching off of her. At the shoe store, Casper and his buddies come in hoping for Dax to hook them all up with a pair of shoes. Dax doesn't have enough money to cover the expenses, so Jess has to help him out. Dax promises that Casper is going to elevate them since Dax has entered his team into the Rucker Classic basketball tournament. Dax returns to the gym with new jerseys for the team, only to find out that Mookie has taken over as coach. Dax gets pissed and tries to pull Casper's shoes off of him, and the video of him doing so goes viral. Disgraced and with no team or money, Jess kicks Dax out.

Those player-performers are good value, though, and the film is vibrant and occasionally funny.

"Uncle Drew confirms the urban legend that the best stand-up comedy, face-to-face drama, and spontaneously creative choreography can be found on city basketball courts."

Its heart is in the right place, but some lively performances from the better-than-you'd-expect ballers-turned-actors can only paper over a thin, cliché-riddled script so much.

Uncle Drew mistakes its goofy pitch for a free pass to be simple with its comedy, and sappy with its emotions.

The game plan feels too conservative, not allowing the playmaking stars to just do their thing.

The jokes could be dirtier, the plot looser, the basketball action more gleefully ludicrous. Instead, everything feels very competent but safe.

The message is undercut by the fact that they're all decades younger than the movie says they are, and under the amateurish old-age makeup, they aren't actors enough to make it work.

Lil Rel Howery, Tiffany Haddish, JB Smoove and Nick Kroll are terrific, as we'd expect. It's more of a surprise that basketballers Irving, Miller, Robinson, Leslie, et al., are also quite good.

An amiable, good-natured film that delivers little of substance other than a pleasant "forget about the outside world" experience for 103 minutes. Sometimes that's good enough.

It's a totally formulaic sports movie, but it's got a lot of liveliness to it and watching these guys play off of each other is fun.

Uncle Drew is more than a vehicle to sell cola, not to mention basketball's chief product-placement fetish, sneakers. It's also a sweet-intentioned bit of summer fun.
